Dear Members of the K-12 list serve,
This announcement is redundant for many of you, but for the new
members of the list, I would like to introduce the Creative Learning
Exchange. We are a small non-profit devoted to encouraging the use of
systems education in K-12 education. Systems education includes the use of
system dynamics, systems thinking and learner-centered learning. Our
website (http://sysdyn.mit.edu/cle/) has a more in depth description of the
CLE as well as over 200 pieces of curriculum ranging from a few pages long
to extensive units which teachers have developed to incorporate systems
education into their classrooms. Please look at the website and do not
hesitate to e-mail me with any questions (stuntzln@tiac.net).

Hello Brock!
My name is José Farinha, I am a Psychologist and currently I am teaching
Educational Psychology related matters, in the University of Algarve in
Faro, Portugal.
I once was involved with sistemic family therapy and I am from several years
been interested on developing a sistemic view of the classroom with the main
purpose of passing those ideas to my students who are going to be teachers
and educators. So seems to me that your concerns are also my concerns...
If you like to start a dialogue on this please reply to my adress below.
Yours.

Hi all...I have been reading this discussion for several years but have not
been
able to use STELLA before. That will change this year as a result of
attending a
workshop,CC-SUSTAIN workshop in Portland. Will be working with Title 1 math
students at high school level and was wondering if anyone out there was
doing the
same? If so would love to hear of your experiences or ideas in dealing with
students in this category. I live in the Portland, OR area.

Hi Robert,
I am not sure what a title 1 math class at the high school level means, but
my experience as a middle school math teacher might be relevant.
I have students at the pre-algebra and algebra levels work fairly extensively
with Stella. A lot of the work does not involve feedback, but is very useful
for student understanding of linear growth. I have found that it really helps
students with understanding of slopes and especially 'word problems': asking
students to assign meaningful names to stocks/flows is really helpful.
I recommend that you start early... the students will take off with it.

Organization: Paw Paw Public Schools
Greetings to all! I've been following some of the exchanges for the past
month or so and have visited previous discussions as well. Ever since
attending the Systems Thinking in Action Conference a couple of years ago I
have been very interested in learning about how to apply this "new"
thinking in the public school sector. I am the superintendent of a K-12
district in Southwest lower Michigan with an enrollment of 2300 students.
I'm not exactly certain of where to go with this stuff at this level but
know that there must be something that will make sense. Our school board
recently shifted from a traditional form of governance to one that uses
John Carvers model of Policy Governance. I think this change in direction
also provides an excellent opportunity to use systems thinking on a
wide-scale basis. I'd welcome any thoughts or ideas from those interested.
Thanks for making this site available!

Subject: applying systems thinking at the district level

Hello Mark -- I'm responding to your message on the system dynamics
listserve. I edit a publication called STRATEGIES for School System
Leaders on District-Level Change, which is distributed to all members of
AASA and about 1500 others on the mailing list. Our July 99 issue (16
pages) was on "SYSTEMS THINKING: Untangling the Gordian Knots of Systemic
Change." In addition to the introductory essay, the issue includes case
studies of four districts that are applying systems thinking to their
reform efforts. It sounds like a potentially good fit with your interest
in "where to go with this stuff at this level." I'd be happy to send you
a copy if you could give me your "snail mail" address. It's also available
on line: http://www.aasa.org/Pubs/strategies/contents.htm.

I am writing as a result of a note I read in the June/July issue of The
Systems Thinker.
I am a middle school assistant principal in the State of Washington. I am
interested in joining what ever you have organized in the realm of
applying systems thinking in schools.

This is interesting Scott (Thompson). I will look it up online and will be
interested
in learning what the experiences have been. I tried earlier to interest
some individuals in our local school system but did not have takers then.

My name is Warren and I am a Ph.D. student in Virginia Tech's
Industrial and Systems Engineering Department. My dissertation
is employing system dynamics modelling very heavily. I am a true systems
thinker. Over the years I was able to train myself to see causal
relationships and feedback loops. I believe that the complexity of the
world today requires systems thinking, and that thinking must start early
in life. I joined this listserv to see what system dynamic initiatives,
problems, and education are being offered to our school children. I am
especially interested in this because I have a nine month old son, whom I
want to teach the art of systems thinking. Additionally, my wife is an
elementary school educator, who I hope will benefit from some of your
lessons.
